I have decided to write another light-hearted post just about what I’ve been thinking. I understand that the title might seem confusing but it will make sense soon enough.
I read this quote the other day that kind of put into words how I felt about something better than I ever could’ve described it.
“With languages, you can move from one social situation to another. With languages, you are at home anywhere.”
The part that really caught my attention was the second half of the quote which states “With languages, you are at home anywhere.” And the reason why i loved it so much as because it is one of the main reasons why learning a language is such a huge advantage.
When people talk about the advantages of learning a new language, they usually talk about travel. If you learn German, then you can travel around Germany easily and speak to locals in their own language.
What they don’t stress about is the fact that when you know a language, you can feel at home in the country because it allows you to access the people and culture in a way that only a citizen or native can and that changes the experience of the country by a lot.
I think learning Spanish would mean allowing the whole of South America (excluding Brazil) to be my home because no matter where I go, I will be able to speak like a native, and even live like one shall I choose to and that takes me one step closer to my goal in like which is to be a traveler and not a tourist.
I am in no way discriminating any type of travel or the way anyone chooses to do it. I am merely stating that this is what I prefer for myself. And just to be clear, I do not plan to go to every country as a traveler. I do not mind, in fact even prefer, to be a tourist in some places.
However, when I travel to Spain and all around South America, it will be as a native and I will do everything in my power to make myself feel like a citizen of the country itself. That is definitely something I know that I want to experience and I think that is what motivates me to learn Spanish even on days when I am lazy or when it gets difficult.
With languages, you are at home anywhere. Let that sink in. When you’re struggling to find the motivation to learn a language, close your eyes and picture yourself in that country, speaking to the local citizens in their language and them being incredibly impressed with your language skills and telling you that you sound like a native.
That is basically all I wanted to say for now. Even writing this has felt like giving myself the boost I needed to up my language learning and reminded me why I started this journey in the first place.
Until next time.
